Our Events
In order to broaden the club's knowledge and development, SMU Emerging Markets has been actively participating in and organising various events, dialogues and forums on the six key emerging regions.
SEM Alumni Night 2022
After three years, the SEMily has finally been reunited at our long-awaited Alumni Night! On 24 June 2022, the 11 batches gathered at the Alcove to catch up with their batchmates and mingle with members from different batches. We hope that all attendees had a wonderful evening together, thank you once again to all alumni and members for spending your Friday night with us! See you again soon at our next event!
2022 Emerging Stock Pitch Competition
SMU Emerging Markets proudly presents the first edition of the Emerging Markets Stock Pitch Competition, an international event hosted in collaboration with Warwick Emerging Markets Society, Emerging Markets Network (Melbourne), and Emerging Markets Club at the University of St.Gallen. On 11 March 2022, the finalists competed for a cash pool of 600AUD, defending their investment theses in front of our panel of experienced professionals from various fields in the finance industry.
Emerging Markets Forum 2021
Last Friday, 1 October, SMU Emerging Markets held our annual Emerging Markets Forum discussing ‘Investments and Technology in China & Southeast Asia'. Our esteemed speakers shared great insights on China & SEA’s investment climate today. During the Q&A session, attendees and speakers engaged in a meaningful discussion on topics such as microenvironment, investments, and capital markets. We would like to thank our esteemed speakers once again for joining us this year!
Emerging Markets Forum 2020
On 25 September 2020, our annual Emerging Markets Forum took place online in an intimate Zoom session. Our panel of experienced industry professionals shared many invaluable insights centred around the topic “Navigating Investments in SEA Post-COVID-19. This evening, we discussed the pandemic’s impacts on major economies within South East Asia, also analysing the region’s recovery and future opportunities for investments.
J.P. Morgan Asset & Wealth Management Challenge 2020
Team 888 Capital comprising SMU Emerging Markets members Khor Jia Xuan (Desk Director, Central East Asia), Timothy Lee (Associate, Southeast Asia), and Alex Koh (Vice-President) have emerged as finalists (Singapore round) in the annual J.P. Morgan Asset & Wealth Management Challenge 2020. The team created a customized portfolio comprising various asset classes, such as equities, fixed income, and alternatives aimed at meeting the needs of a fictitious client.
AIBC GIC Asset Management Competition 2020
Team Santorini Capital comprising two SMU Emerging Markets members Mark Yeo (1st from left; President) and Derrick Fung (2nd from left; Commonwealth of Independent States Director), has emerged as 1st Runners-up at the inaugural GIC Asset Management Competition 2020 organised in tandem with the Asia Investment & Banking Conference 2020. The final round this year was held virtually over Zoom on 1 September 2020.
SEM Reunion 2019
Reuniting in the last week of 2019, all 9 batches of SMU Emerging Markets were gathered back in SMU on 23rd December. The night began with dinner and sharing from founding members of SEM and continued over drinks. Besides getting to know the newly minted 9th batch of Analysts, it was an meaningful and enriching opportunity for SEM members to connect over professional and personal experiences. We look forward to seeing full strength at our 8th annual Alumni Night in 2020!
Emerging Markets Forum 2019
SMU Emerging Markets proudly presented our 3rd Emerging Markets Forum on 27 September 2019. This year, we explored what it means for a company to do business in Southeast Asia's emerging economies - the prospects, challenges, and rewards - as well as the regional capital raising landscape and up-and-coming industries. We are fortunate to be joined by a panel of esteemed industry professionals with extensive experience in this space!
