In order to broaden the club's knowledge and development, SMU Emerging Markets has been actively participating in and organising various events, dialogues and forums on the seven key emerging regions.
1st Runners-up: Asia Investment & Banking Conference GIC Asset Management Competition 2020
Team Santorini Capital comprising two SMU Emerging Markets members Mark Yeo (1st from left; President) and Derrick Fung (2nd from left; Commonwealth of Independent States Director), has emerged as 1st Runners-up at the inaugural GIC Asset Management Competition 2020 organised in tandem with the Asia Investment & Banking Conference 2020. The final round this year was held virtually over Zoom on 1 September 2020.
The team pitched a buy call for Bharti Airtel, an Indian global telecommunications service provider, to the panel of judges from GIC. With investors flocking towards signals of promising growth in emerging markets such as India and Africa, the team believes it is important to cut through the noise and properly evaluate growth against the underlying structural and macroeconomic risks. Congratulations to the team!
Reuniting in the last week of 2019, all 9 batches of SMU Emerging Markets were gathered back in SMU on 23rd December. The night began with dinner and sharing from founding members of SEM and continued over drinks. Besides getting to know the newly minted 9th batch of Analysts, it was an meaningful and enriching opportunity for SEM members to connect over professional and personal experiences. We look forward to seeing full strength at our 8th annual Alumni Night in 2020!
SMU Emerging Markets proudly presented our 3rd Emerging Markets Forum on 27 September 2019. This year, we explored what it means for a company to do business in Southeast Asia's emerging economies - the prospects, challenges, and rewards - as well as the regional capital raising landscape and up-and-coming industries. We are fortunate to be joined by a panel of esteemed industry professionals with extensive experience in this space!
9th Batch of Analysts Recruitment
Between July to September 2019, SMU Emerging Markets conducted recruitment of the 9th Batch of Analysts. As we continue to be SMU’s premier market research club, we has been focusing on strengthening the new batch of Analysts with the necessary research and analytical skills to gain insights into a plethora of industries in emerging regions, and identify macro trends emerging economies – from a political, economic and business perspective.
SEM Alumni Night 2019
On Friday, 1 March 2019, SMU Emerging Markets warmly welcomed back our alumni and senior members to our 7th annual Alumni Night! It was great to see the members from previous batches catching up with one another; it was even more heartening to see senior members mingling with the current batch of EM members! Thank you to all alumni and senior members for spending your Friday night with us, despite your busy schedule!
On 21st September 2018, SMU Emerging Markets organised the 2nd edition of our inaugural Emerging Markets Forum (EMF) at SMU Labs. Titled ‘Fintech Trends in South-East Asia’, the forum explored developments and identified the key business opportunities and challenges regarding FinTech in the South-East Asia landscape.
J.P. Morgan Asset & Wealth Management Challenge 2020
Team 888 Capital comprising SMU Emerging Markets members Jia Xuan (Desk Director, CEA), Timothy Lee (Associate, Southeast Sia), and Alex Koh (Vice-President) have emerged as finalists (Singapore round) in the annual J.P. Morgan Asset & Wealth Management Challenge 2020.
The team created a customized portfolio comprising various asset classes, such as equities, fixed income, and alternatives aimed at meeting the needs of a fictitious client. Congratulations to them!
