In order to broaden the club's knowledge and development, SMU Emerging Markets has been actively participating in and organising various events, dialogues and forums on the seven key emerging regions.

SEM Reunion 2018

 

A night of food, drinks and fun-filled laughter. On 13 September 2018, SEM had a reunion at SMU B3: Burger, Beer & Bistro from the current batch all the way up to the founding batch. A big thank you to our founder Gary, our alumni and everyone who came. Cheers to keeping the spirit of the club alive!

BNP Paribas Digital Lab Tour 2018

 

On 24 August 2018, SMU Emerging Markets had the honour of visiting the BNP Paribas Digital Lab at Ocean Financial Centre. It was exciting to see first-hand how banking is working hand-in-hand with technology to develop innovative solutions for private banking clients. We would like to extend a big thank you to Joe who showed us around and Jasper who helped arrange this SEM exclusive!

SEM finishes as 1st Runners-up at the Yale-NUS GCC Belt & Road Initiative 2018

 

Team CEAJIU comprising of SMU Emerging Markets members Ron Mak, Samuel Joel Chiang, Balkis Ammal, and Chua Deng Quan has emerged as 1st Runners-up at the inaugural Yale-NUS Global China Connection Belt and Road Initiative Case Competition held at Yale-NUS on 31 March 2018. The team would like to thank Prof. Low Aik Meng, Prof. Yuanto Kusnadi, and Prof. Wang Jiwei for their guidance, as well as members of SMU Emerging Markets for their support.

SEM Alumni Night, 2018



Time flies when we are having fun. Last Friday, 2 February 2018, we successfully held our club's 6th annual Alumni Night. Thank you all alumni and seniors for taking time off to attend our club's annual event. It was great seeing many of you from the previous batches coming down to catch up with old friends. It was also heartwarming to see seniors sharing their experiences with new members. This is what makes our club special - We are SEMily!

Inaugural Emerging Markets Forum, 2017

 

On Wednesday 13th September 2017, SMU Emerging Markets launched our inaugural Emerging Markets Forum. Named "Demystifying Russia", the forum explored commonly held perceptions of Russia and delved into her key business opportunities and challenges. We were fortunate to be joined by distinguished panellists: Ms. Gwyneth Tan, former Singapore trade commissioner to Russia, Mr. Vadislav Solodkiy, managing partner of life.SREDA, Mr Timur Khamitov, head of Partnerships and Startup Ecosystems, and Mr. Karan Tilani, Head of Asia at World of Diamonds Group.

SEM Alumni Night, 2017



On 18 February, SMU Emerging Markets held its annual Alumni Night. We warmly welcomed the return of alumni and seniors from all the previous batches to partake in this event.

We would like to extend our gratitude to the alumni and seniors for taking time off their busy work schedules to attend the 5th annual Alumni Night. It was heartening to see members from the previous batches returning to catch up with one another and also to interact with the newly-minted members of the 6th batch. In the coming years ahead, it remains imperative that SMU Emerging Markets persists as a tightly-knitted community: we are driven, passionate, and most importantly, family. We look forward to seeing you again next year!

India Lunchtime Talk Series



The India Lunchtime Talk Series was birthed from a collaboration between SMU Emerging Markets and Office of Provost, India Desk. In the first of a series of lunch talk sessions, Mr Sat Pal Khattar, chairman and founder of both Khattar Wong and Partners and Khattar Holdings will be giving his address as well as discussing issues surrounding the investment landscape of India with our very own bright and enterprising SMU student population.

Future China Global and Youth Forum 2014



Organised by Business China, the Future China Global Forum features various holistic discussion of China’s political, economic, business, societal facets by eminent government and business leaders, academia, media personalities, artists, cultural personalities, renowned experts from China, Asia and around the world. In 2014, the theme of the forum is “CHINA AT THE CROSSROADS: THE WAY FORWARD” and delegates can expect to gain an insider’s view on China’s future development trajectory based on the reform blueprint outlined at the Third Plenum.

 

As a part of the Future China Global Forum, the Future China Youth Forum targets youths who are bicultural, bilingual and express interest in understanding China. SMU Emerging Markets will be participating in the Scholar Showdown, which is a competitive platform for participants to showcase their knowledge and insights about China. 

India Talk Series: An Industry Leader's Perspective



The India Talk Series was birthed from a collaboration between SMU Emerging Markets and Office of Provost, India Desk. In the second session of the India Talk Series, Mr Piyush Gupta, Cheif Executive Officer of DBS Group Holdings Ltd, will be giving his address as well as discussing issues surrounding the investment landscape of India and Asia's emerging economies with our very own bright and enterprising SMU student population. If you are keen to find answers to these and many other questions, join us for this highly interesting session. 

Inaugural 'Year of India' Event in Singapore



On 16 August 2014, the High Commission of India invited members of SEM to the inaugural ‘Year of India’ event in Singapore, to commemorate 50 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two countries. This exclusive event was celebrated at the NUS Cultural Centre Hall and was officially inaugurated by External Affairs Minister, HE Mrs Sushma Swaraj, and Minister for Foreign Affairs & Law of Singapore, HE Mr K Shanmugam.

 

The programme included an intriguing dialogue on the political relations betweent he two countries over the years and the audience was treated to a dance performance by Kalakshetra Foundation from India.

 

Russia-Singapore Business Forum, 2013



The Russia-Singapore Business Forum (RSBF) was originally set up with a simple mission to create greater understanding of Russia and the CIS regions. Since its conception in 2006, RSBF has gathered momentum each year, establishing itself as the most effective platform for Singapore and Asian companies to forge B-to-B linkages with their Russian/CIS counterparts.

Future China Youth Forum, 2013



The 2013 forum featured a total of 19 sessions and a strong slate of more than 70 internationally esteemed speakers. The keynote speaker this year is Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

 

3 students delegates from SEM were privileged to be given the opportunity to attend and learn from the experts' experiences of living and working in China. We also greatly benefitted from the networking opportunities with more than 400 distinguished business leaders, public personalities and industrial experts.

Dialogue with Mr S. R. Nathan



On 20th August, SMU Emerging Markets joined Mr S R Nathan for an informal dialogue session planned by the India Initiatives and learned about his personal reflections regarding the business landscape of India and Singapore. Apart from the conversation, this event featured a wine and cheese session which was designed as a platform for business leaders, professors and students alike to interact and share their opinions regarding the opportunities present within both countries.

SEM Awards Night, 2014



On 9 January, SMU Emerging Markets celebrated its annual Awards Night to give recognition to outstanding desks and individuals for their performances in 2013.

Abu Dhabi Singapore Joint Forum



The Abu Dhabi - Singapore Joint Forum (ADSJF) was established in 2007 to deepen and broaden the bilateral cooperation between Abu Dhabi and Singapore. The Forum is co-chaired by H.E. Khaldoon Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Executive Affairs Authority of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi (EAA) and H.E. Lee Yi Shyan, Minister of State for Trade & Industry and Manpower, Republic of Singapore, and consists of 16-level business leaders and government officials from Abu Dhabi (8) and Singapore (8). This year, SMU Emerging Markets will be participating as delegates for the event.

MEI Annual Conference & Case Challenge, 2013



SEM took part MEIT Case Challenge 2013 where the tea clinched 2nd runner-up amongst competition from the local universities. This year, SEM was invited to the MEI annual conference to learn more about the changing dynamics between Asia and Middle East.

SEM Awards Night, 2013



SMU Emerging Markets held its inaugural Awards Night 2012 to commend key members that have pushed the club to new frontiers, namely the founders, excellent desks and outstanding exco and analysts. In addition, Awards Night also serves as a key annual cohesion event for the club.

World Islamic Banking Conference, 2013



On 3rd June to 5th June, SEM was invited down as delegates in the World Islamic Banking Conference (WIBC) 2013. This high-profile event featured many well-known speakers who are prominent in the Islamic Banking scene including Khalid Hamad Abdul-Rahman Hamad, the chairman of the International Islamic Financial Market (IIFM).

Africa Singapore Business Forum, 2012



Africa Singapore Business Forum is the premier business platform for exchanging business insights and promoting collaboration between Africa and Singapore.Into its second edition, Africa Singapore Business Forum 2012 will feature top minds in business and government as they delve into topics pertinent to Africa, Singapore and post-recovery Asia – such as achieving sustainable growth, identifying opportunities emerging in these regions and harnessing these new engines of growth.Held in Singapore on 29th and 30th August 2012, this conference will also provide numerous networking opportunities, including a cocktail reception.

Storewars, 2012



SMU Emerging Markets took part in the inaugural Storewars 2012 which is a business simulation program developed in INSEAD. Throughout the intensive program, SEM was split up into groups where each group took charge of a virtual company and devised their own strategies to accomplish success.
